What to expect after treatment

Everyone responds a little differently. Redness (erythema) usually appears within a few minutes after the procedure. A mild sunburn feeling in and around the treated area is also normal and expected. These reactions usually go away within 1 to 4 hours and can be managed with Tylenol or Advil and cold compresses, although this is rarely needed.

The full effects appear gradually. It can take 3 to 6 months to see full results, although some patients see them sooner. Results have been known to last up to 6 months, and recent studies have shown that some collagen changes can last several years, depending on how quickly a patient’s skin ages.

Until sensitivity has completely gone away, avoid

• Scented lotions or soaps, exfoliating creams (Retin-A, glycolic and salicylic acids, and alpha hydroxy acids), acne creams or gels, loofah sponges and aggressive scrubbing.
• Hot or cold water — wash with lukewarm water.
• Swimming pools and spas with chemicals or chlorine, and extreme temperature changes.
• Activities that cause heavy sweating.
• Direct sunlight.

Makeup and skin care

You may apply makeup right after treatment as long as your skin is intact and there are no signs of blistering. If the skin is broken or a blister appears, apply Aquaphor or Vaseline and call the office at 501-817-3923.

Follow-up treatments

Additional treatments are based on your provider’s recommendation and are typically 2 to 4 weeks apart. The number of treatments depends on your condition and how your body responds to the light. Most patients need a series of 5 treatments for the best results.
