Pre- & post-care instructions
Dermal Fillers
Please read these instructions before your Dermal Fillers appointment and keep them handy afterward.
Before your treatment
- Tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores around the mouth (perioral herpes) so you can get advice about antiviral medicine before treatment.
- Avoid dental work, including routine teeth cleaning, for at least 2 weeks before and one month after treatment. Avoid oral surgery for at least 4 weeks before and one month after treatment.
- 7 days before treatment (to prevent bruising): avoid over-the-counter blood thinners such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen and Aleve. Also avoid herbal supplements such as garlic, vitamin E, ginkgo biloba, St. John’s wort and omega-3 capsules. If you have a heart or blood vessel condition, check with your doctor before stopping aspirin.
- 3 days before treatment: avoid topical products such as retinols, glycolic acid, alpha hydroxy acids and other “anti-aging” products. Also avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing or hair removal cream on the area to be treated.
- Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before and after your treatment to minimize bruising.
- Do not get dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any of the ingredients, or have a neurological disease.
- Do not schedule filler treatments within 2 weeks of a major event, such as a wedding or photo shoot, to avoid swelling or bruising at that time.
Day of treatment
- Arrive with a clean face. Please do not wear makeup.
- To keep you comfortable, a topical numbing cream may be applied. In some cases, a local numbing medicine will be injected into or around the treatment area.
- You may feel mild tenderness or stinging after the injection.
- To make sure the correction is smooth and even, your provider may massage the treated area. This may cause temporary, minimal redness.
