Pre- & post-care instructions
Sculptra®
Please read these instructions before your Sculptra® appointment and keep them handy afterward.
Before your treatment
- Avoid aspirin, NSAIDs (such as ibuprofen), ginkgo biloba, garlic supplements, green tea, flax oil, cod liver oil, vitamins A and E, and essential fatty acids for up to 1 week before and after your injection. These increase your risk of bruising.
- Do not drink alcohol for 24 hours before or after your treatment to avoid extra bruising.
- You may take arnica tablets 2 to 3 days before your injection to lower the risk of bruising.
- Do not apply potentially irritating products for 2 to 3 days before and after treatment, such as tretinoin, glycolic acid, benzoyl peroxide or hydroquinone.
- Tell your provider if you have a history of cold sores so you can get advice about antiviral medicine before treatment.
- Do not use Sculptra if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or are allergic to any of its ingredients. Please ask your provider any questions before treatment.
Day of treatment
- Arrive 10 minutes early to complete any consent forms or paperwork.
- Come with a clean face. Please do not wear makeup, or bring a cleansing wipe to remove it before you are called back to the exam room.
After your treatment
- Apply ice (without firm pressure) for 20 minutes, 3 times on the day of treatment.
- You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol) for mild tenderness or discomfort.
- Massage the treated areas 5 times a day, for 5 minutes each time, for 5 days after treatment.
- You will have moderate swelling and redness, and possibly bruising. These usually go away in about 7 days. Arnica gel or arnica tablets can help reduce bruising.
- Avoid extended UV exposure until redness and swelling have gone away. Apply SPF 30 or higher.
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours to reduce bruising.
- Avoid laser, IPL or skin-tightening treatments of the area for at least 2 to 3 weeks.
- You may restart the skin care products listed above 1 week after your injection.
