Pre- & post-care instructions
Cutera® excel V
Please read these instructions before your Cutera® excel V appointment and keep them handy afterward.
Before your treatment
- No sun tanning or self-tanners for 4 weeks before treatment. This includes spray tans, tanning lotions, tanning beds and sun exposure.
- Some medications and supplements may increase the risk of bruising, such as blood thinners and vitamin E.
- Avoid treatments that may irritate your skin for 1 to 2 weeks before treatment, such as Retin-A and hair removal creams (depilatories).
- Tell the clinic about any changes to your health history or medications since your last appointment.
- If you have a history of herpes or cold sores, you may need an antiviral prescription before treatment.
After your treatment
- Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen.
- Bruising, redness and significant swelling are common and go away with time, typically within one week. An over-the-counter antihistamine, cold compresses or ice packs, and sleeping with your head raised on an extra pillow can help.
- A reaction that looks like a bug bite is common and usually goes away in 1 to 2 days.
- Avoid heat, such as hot tubs and saunas, for 1 to 2 days.
- Avoid skin irritants for one week after treatment. These include products containing tretinoin, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic or salicylic acid, and astringents.
- Call the clinic if you have any concerns, such as blistering or excessive redness or swelling.
Leg vein treatments only
- Compression stockings (20–30 mmHg) are optional.
- Avoid high-impact activity for 3 to 5 days.
- Hemosiderin staining (brown staining) may occur after treatment. It usually fades with time, which can take 1 to 2 years, but in rare cases it may be permanent.
- Strictly avoiding sun exposure may lower the risk of permanent staining.
- Large leg veins may take many months to resolve and should not be re-treated before then.
