Phototherapy uses a medical device that gives off very specific wavelengths of ultraviolet light to treat skin diseases such as psoriasis, vitiligo and eczema.
Who is a good candidate?
Phototherapy is appropriate for people with moderate to severe skin disease. Typically, 3% to 10% of the body affected is considered moderate, and 10% or more is considered severe.
What to expect
A typical treatment plan requires three treatments per week. At first, treatments may last only a few seconds, but they gradually get longer over time. For psoriasis, clearing usually takes 25 to 30 consistent treatments.
Results
Phototherapy is not a cure, but approximately 85% of psoriasis patients achieve significant results with treatment. Symptoms may gradually return after several months of remission, so your provider may suggest a maintenance plan to keep your skin clear.
